Greenmantle was completely renovated in 2000 by architects Don Nelson & Associates. In 2003 they won the prestigious ADNZ Design Award for Residential Alterations and Additions for their Greenmantle renovation.
Don Nelson was commissioned to produce a plan that included significantly enlarging the house and changing its layout, while retaining its state of grace and grandeur.
“We took the style of the existing house and enhanced it,” says Don Nelson. “Adding curves, for example, provided another dimension and was a way to introduce a feature typical of many houses of this era.”
The extensions trebled the floor area and the feature room, the formal dining room, includes a fully glazed turret which overlooks the extensive landscaping. “Pushing out the dining room was a way to bring the house into the magnificent garden,” says Nelson. “The turret is framed by a large, weeping silver birch tree which is washed by floodlights at night.”
